Cloud Native Software Development is based on numerous individual components. The functionality of cloud native apps must be verifiable and evaluable for their users. We are also able to collect, store and analyze messages ejected by apps via logging. We use tracing to backtrack the path of a request to continuously optimize apps. We further this process through chaos engineering. In this process, incorrect entries are deliberately made in a system to put its resilience to the test.

The many tools mentioned above facilitate the management of an app. For the handling of all these tools, it is advantageous to rely on platforms. In this regard, we refer to Certified Kubernetes offerings. These offerings are unmodified, open source code that we can base software on. They are either distributed via distributors, hosted by infrastructure providers, or used in the form of installers.

Open source code offers the opportunity for anyone to participate in the development of new apps. This offers many advantages, but also involves risks. ELSIC sells products that serve to ensure the operational safety and accident prevention of electrical systems. For an optimal process flow, ELSIC is dependent on a powerful and at the same time user-friendly Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system: the ELSIC Schreibbüro.

Summary

The previous software solution could only be controlled via console and ran exclusively on outdated hardware. The goal was to emulate the previous software so as to facilitate familiarization with the new software. The main challenge was to create a modern user interface that met the requirements of the sector. The UI had to be both easily accessible and have a high level of functionality that would suit the whole range of the various departments. In addition, the new ERP system was supposed to optimize existing processes and automate them where possible.

We offered ELSIC a fully comprehensive software solution written in Java, from development into implementation and customer support in day-to-day business, which we continue to this day. Thanks to the agile development process, the needs of the individual departments could be appropriately mapped in the program. By ensuring a proportional downward compatibility to the previous software, the changeover to the new software was accelerated. We designed the software to meet ELSIC’s specific needs, but its modular architecture can simultaneously form a basis for the development of future ERP systems.

The new software solution's self-explanatory UI reduces training time, even for new employees. The tool is also able to streamline this work process enormously by providing a wide range of templates for document creation and an associated Word plug-in. In this context, internal communication also benefits from the integration of hardware interfaces to printers, which allow several devices to be controlled simultaneously with different documents. Serial letters and review files can be created with just a few clicks. Waybills can also be created fully automatically in the new software solution instead of using a typewriter, and printed out directly. Likewise, DEL values are read out on a daily basis in order to fully automate the price calculation.

Solution

ELSIC can handle customer service, from the request for quotation to invoicing and shipping, within the new ERP system. The numerous process optimizations have led to a reduction in processing time and effort, thus facilitating both internal and external communication. Accessibility and performance to the new software is ensured from the start by taking up existing functions as well as a proportionate downward compatibility to the predecessor product. The UI facilitates the operation and ensures the functionality of the tool in the future.

The Nielsen Company is responsible for the marketing-oriented evaluation of recorded sports events. The video analysis verifies the performance that is to be delivered.

Nielsen's outdated video analysis tool was to be replaced by a cloud-based app. The goal was to read out the videos that were to be provided in the cloud with frame accuracy and to navigate within videos more easily. In its basic analysis functionality, we oriented ourselves to the existing tool. A central change was made in the configuration of the user interface. The read-out frames were to be integrated into the user interface in order to replace the previous solution of a pop-up video player.

For the duration of the project, a team of frontend and backend developers as well as testers were made available to our client. The videos are first loaded from the server into an S3 bucket. In order to be able to handle the videos on the server in a way that is optimized for the browser, we created a frame worker that extracts frames from the videos and stores them in the S3 bucket. An SQS Queue informs the frame worker that new videos are uploaded to the bucket. The SQS Queue groups the videos according to the “first in, first out” principle.

Independently from our development team, Nielsen developed a GraphQL API that provided a central interface for our work. To communicate with the GraphQL API, we created a Backend For Frontend (BFF) that prepares the extracted data for the GUI. The BFF is also connected to a frame server, which in turn connects to the bucket where the videos are stored. The BFF reads out and transmits the frames needed for the ones in the frontend.

To avoid having to wait for cloud services or deployments while developing the tool, we set up a local minIO server in addition to the S3 bucket. This allows developers to switch between cloud-based services and the local server as needed via configuration.

For a user-friendly video analysis option, we provided Nielsen with a new video playing applicationn named frame slider. The framer slider displays the video in individual frames in the frontend, meaning only a small part of the video file actually has to be read out to ensure functionality. We designed the tool in Canvas before integration into the user interface. This was also enhanced with numerous features, including user interface configuration.

User authorization for the video analytics tool takes place through Okta via single sign on. In addition, we created a Grafana dashboard through which data and logs can be visualized and monitored.

The user-friendly video analysis is done via the video playing application called frame slider. The analyzed video is streamed via websocket. In the user interface, solely the frames that need to be displayed are read out which minimizes data traffic. The user interface of the previously used tool was adapted and supplemented with functions that alleviate the daily analysis routine. New users can easily familiarize themselves with the functionality of the frame slider via an interactive walk-through.

In the interests of employee protection and to provide supervisors and departments with a better overview, we record the working and absence times of our employees. At the same time, we optimize our own work processes through simple and efficient processing time tracking.

Accurate tracking of working hours is required by law in Germany, but is still not implemented in many enterprises. In order to provide our employees with automated proof of their work performance, we were in need of a program for tracking working hours. Since we were not satisfied with existing solutions on the market, we took the implementation into our own hands. Subsequently, we also desired to track our work activities in order to monitor the progress of our projects and to optimize our working methods in the long term.

Internal Work Processes were sustainably and verifiably optimized

The development of our time tracking system is a joint project of our development team, which is subject to a permanent growth process. For us, the development of TimeControl has the positive side effect that we can entrust new team members with the implementation of features on our internal tool in order to introduce them to our working methods and at the same time directly create added value for us. As a result, we can ensure that our customers are provided with competent staff who is familiar with our internal work processes.

We programmed the backend and the Android application in Java and Kotlin, and created the WebUI using TypeScript together with the Angular framework. We developed the terminal UI in C# using the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF). We also designed the terminal to be compatible with RFID chips. For this purpose, we developed a controller in C++ that enables the reading of the chips. The various user interfaces are designed adaptively and thus enable the customizable data display.

We also established software interfaces with project management tools such as YouTrack and Jira to streamline the data volume in TimeControl itself. At the same time, data can also be transmitted to the project management tools to keep the processing flow within TimeControl and the external tool synchronized. We integrated another interface for evaluating the collected data in Excel.

The worktime tracking in TimeControl takes into account the German legal requirements, e. g. concerning break times or holiday and weekend working time regulations. Vacation and sick leave can be reported independently by employees and confirmed by supervisors. Logging in and out at terminals is possible via RFID chips. In addition, the use of the program on different end devices enables simple remote working time tracking. The processing time tracking also enabled us to sustainably optimize our work flow and, thanks to the connection of TimeControl to our internal ticket system, we were able to shorten the training cycle for remote developers. The interfaces to project management tools as well as to Excel ensure a perfect integration of TimeControl into our daily work and provide our managers with reliable and meaningful reports on the performance of our employees.

The Nielsen Company provides video evaluation and market analysis to companies in the sports and marketing sector around the globe via Sports Connect. The permanent availability of all program functionalities along with over one billion data records provide opportunities for exposure analysis, media monitoring and social media analysis at any time.

Nielsen’s previous software was to be replaced by a solution with a modern architecture and contemporary design that would build on the existing functions but add a wide range of functionalities. The newly developed client-facing app formed the final step of data collection, analysis and evaluation process. Due to Nielsen’s global portfolio, the permanent availability and full functionality of the new software had to be ensured, especially during core working hours in America and Europe. The reporting of Exposure Analysis, Media Monitoring as well as Social Media Analysis should occur user-based on purchased data sets.

The development of Sports Connect was carried out by a hybrid team consisting of our The Nielsen Company's internal development department, our experts, and initially additional external consultants. For the new program, we were able to draw on Nielsen’s existing data offering. The data is made available in the AWS Cloud and orchestrated by Docker Engine Swarm mode. This allows the data to be selected and aggregated for applicable clients.

The deployment challenges led to a multi-stage feature testing phase. This begins at the developer level, where our team first tests functionality in sandboxes. The feature is then transferred to a test system for integration testing. For complex features, blue-green releases are also conducted in order to establish a permanently stable runtime. The architecture of our solution is based on the modular approach of microservices. This ensures user-specific feature integration. We established the logic of business analysis processes through code written in Spring Boot. The provision of data to the end customer is user-based on purchased data sets, which are enhanced by live updating and calculation based on ClickHouse. With the help of Elasticsearch, we also enable end customers to find the information that is relevant to them with pinpoint accuracy.

Nielsen can provide its clients via Sports Connect with the most up-to-date market analysis data twenty-four hours a day. We can warrant the stable runtime of the new program through a sustainable feature integration. Approximately 50 different microservices provide users with extensive functionality tailored to their needs. Sports Connect handles the high volume of data in a fraction of a second and thus provides end customers with real-time exposure analysis in TV, streaming, print, online and social media, tracking of TV and streaming consumption behavior as well as social media-specific data analysis.
